A happy birthday to Marcel Proust, who wrote about France, tea, madeleines, and whipping all in the same book -- granted that the book, A la recherche du temps perdu does contain more than a few pages. I read it all once in the long ago in the Moncrieff translation. Once or twice I've started a section by newer translators, but have not made it though the book again.

Proust died November 18, 1922 before the last volumes of the book was proofed or published. His reputation survived him.
