Last night, I was at a dinner. I ate too much, I possibly drank too much, but I had a wonderful time.

We wuz: minnehahathe Minnehahas, lee_oslee_os, Mel, buttonlassbuttonlass, lollardfishLollardfish, Betsy, Brian, and me. We had two, count 'em, two scallop seviches, multiple fish courses, three salads together and then a separate tuna salad, leeks with gorgonzola and mascarpone, and I provided the desserts, which was a selection of pastries from the Grand Bakery, a pint of whipped cream, and a bottle of muscat. I had a backup Spanish wine, from 1971 that buttonlassbuttonlass mentioned predated her. (Good think I didn't bring the bottle of '49 wine that I have.)

1st
Scallop seviche with grains of paradise (my first taste of the spice), lime (French white Sauvingon blanc)
2nd
Trio of salads: baby greens with beats & humbolt fog, samphire, herbed vinegrette; beans with gruyère, olives, vinegrette; marrinated cucumbers & onions. The samphire, after lively discussion, was passed around and sampled seperatly afterwards. (French white -- spicier than the first white)
3rd
Scallop seviche with avocado, peppers, lime (Austrian Grüner Veltliner which is really a very pleasant wine, mineral and an almost thick taste?)
4th
Tuna lightly seared
5th
Tuna salad with onion (shallot?) seeds
6th
Sea bass
7th
Fish en papillote with duxelles and beurre blanc (French white? - Pouilly Fuisse I think)
8th
Braised leeks with gorgonzolla, mascarpone (where we switched to red wine) (French red of indeterminate grape that was fished up from the cellar and pronounced excellent)
9th & 10th
Selection of pastries, whipped cream, and kumquat ginger gelato, which, owing to a confused dasher, we froze at the table by hand and tried to serve in glasses with straws -- but it was too thick for the straws. Mel was the first to add whipped cream to it, which toned down the ginger a wee bit and was much copied by the rest of the table. (Muscat)

I may have missed a wine or two, and a course or two.

I had fun shopping for the dessert wine. I was at my usual store, Hennepin Lake Liquors, and I was vacillating between their german wine section (which is kind of light and was stripped bare of the good stuff) and their baby dessert wine bottle section (half bottles and the like), when one of the clerks asked me if I needed help. I told him what I was looking for and he asked the owner for suggestions. The owner poured me a sample of the Spanish 71 reserve that I purchased (it's on sale) and asked a rep who was chatting up a customer to tell me about his line of wines. He told me about three of the half-bottle wines, and recommended a half of sauternes, which at $75 was right out of budget. Anyway to add confusion, he grabbed and opened the muscat wine and poured me a sample. I, of course, ended up with both the Spanish 71 reserve and the muscat. Aside from a very early drinking experiment and possibly a few times at the Scottsdale Culinary Festival, I suspect that's the first time I've tasted muscat in quite some time. The ghost of carmel and orange peel from the muscat were haunting my mouth this morning. Unlike my first experiement with the grape, this one did not leave me with a debilitating hangover. The sales rep, when I told him what I was serving them with, recommended the Baker's Wife (42nd & 28th?), which I've not heard of.

The pastry purchaces at the Bakery on Grand were a bit trying. I called first to make sure they had some, and then went over. I planned on continuing on to the minnehahaMinnehaha's, but because I was so early (a very uncomon trait with me), I ran back home. Anyway, at the bakery, the owner/person-in-charge started freaking out that I -- and another guy who arrived after I got there -- were buying desserts. "We need them for tonight...." Grrr. I escaped with two chocolate roulades, a napoleon, two lemon tarts and a pavlova. The lemon tarts were incredible and probably the best finish to the fist. Then, because I was still early even after heading home for a platter, I ran out to Cub and picked up the whipping cream and a box of blackberries for garnish. Sadly, I was still the first one to arrive. There goes my perfect reputation for arriving late down in flames.

Why was the owner of a bakery freaking out because you were buying dessert?

Because...

This is a lovely little bakery in S. Mpls that I've had many breads from. They are really quite good but I have never tried them for dessert.

You should have called so that we could have invited you to come over early. We don't mind having people over before the official start time of parties, most times.
