The Big Let-Down of High Expectations
Jul. 12th, 2014 05:33 pmI ran out to see the Planet of the Apes movie this morning at the crack o' dawn, well, ok, it's summer and dawn comes a wee bit before the movie theaters open, but there I wuz at Southdale, in line, before nine am. Tony Scott over at the NY Times gave it a Critic's Pick award (as a consolation prize against the other summer blockbuster movies like Transformers X?), so I went in with high expectations, too high as it turned out. Oh, the special effects are great, but I kept thinking the writers missed Post-Apocalypse Writing 101 when they wuz in college. I also understand that there are human and ape assholes in that world, but I think turning the plot on their actions was too easy a choice, when difference and fear (I think) could have driven the plot. I guess assholes always makes it easier.
Not only did they run outta diesel, they ran outta batteries! Couldn't even keep digital picture frames going for the fearless human leader asshole...
I'd also appreciate a reason for the "We gotta operate now" line; but I guess I ask too much of my summer spectaculars.
I'm sure moar than me appreciate that post-apocalypse, wimmen are back to birthin babies and doing medical and mom things, leavin the leadin and politicin to us men, who, as usual, do such a great job of it.
I am for sure going to avoid all large shopping centers and big building lobbies post-apocalypse. (Sorry, San Francisco, I don't know what building it was supposed to be.) Oh, and beware that ape with the googly eyes...
