Hardware Trivia
Feb. 20th, 2012 09:16 amI haz been fighting with the desktop. I seem to have won the skirmish if not the war, although it cost me a new hard drive and you know what they cost these days. I robocopied one folder from one drive to the new one via USB 2. Who knew it wuz so slow? A few files with wonky permissions also did not help. I had to take 'em over. I'm sure three seconds o' google would have shown me how to do it in bulk, but I did it manually. Why they wuz hiding in a Temp folder, I'll probably never know. And another thing, deleting 'em before robocopy hits 'em? -- not a good idea. I rearranged the drives in the computer so that the SSD and the new drive (fracking green though it is until those Thai plants get cranking again) are in one bay and the other drives are in the other two bays. The Users folder sits on the green drive while the OS sits on the SSD. So far, it's worked really fine except for when it doesn't. And when it doesn't, it's not been fun. I could be using the SSD as a cache against one of the hard drives, but where's the fun in that?
To celebrate I ordered me some techno junk:
They say there's no rest for the wicked, and I guess that's true. Our Corporate Masters haz decided that President's Day ain't no holiday. I guess that after Baby Bush, I kinda hafta agree.
To celebrate I ordered me some techno junk:
- Motherboard three-pin fan plugs to standard molex. My case haz all molex plugged fans and we hates 'em even if they do all have blue leds. They're kinda hard to find and harder to find cheep.
- One eSATA to SATA 1 M cable coming from Hong Kong for .47 shipping. (I figure the boat'll be docking in LA any month now...) So I can use the motherboard's extra eSATA ports to drive a drive inside the case.
- And a dozen short extenders for all the goddamned transformers that hog any outlet you plug 'em into. eBay, how could you fail me on price so bad? Google - you bad too.
