My sister, cousin, and her roommate have been in town since Wednesday. We've been shopping and eating ever since they got here.

Wed
Was snowy when they arrived. Someone had a flat tire on our journey to That Other Country for Cheap Duck. They called from 22nd and Lyndale, whilst trying to find the downtown Hyatt. Needless to say, they ended up here at 27th and Lyndale. By six-thirty, we had to achieve Edina for bubbly and pre-dinner appies. Dinner was at Ciao Bella in far southern fringe of Edina.

Thurs
Was nicer than Wed, we started off at Victor's Cafe, and we shopped in the Galleria, Southtown, IKEA, and Updale. That night we ate at Spoonriver and finished the night at the Illusion Theater watching the riveting Miss Richfield, 1981.

Fri
Friday was declared Dim Sum day, and we arrived too early at Jun Bo in scenic Richfield. Since IKEA had run outta Glogg, and Jun Bo didn't open for half an hour, we took the back roads to Ingebretsen's in Beautiful South Mpls only to find that it had been invaded by the rampaging hoards of mild mannered Scandinavian berserkers. The meat counter was four to five people deep, which is pretty hard to do with Scandinavians in the four foot wide space. None the less, we took a number and managed to escape with pickled herring, glogg, glogg spices, and our sanity. We returned to Jun Bo to the best Dim Sum I've had. Our table of four was about the only ones ordering, so after they brought one trolley from the kitchen, we just ordered what we wanted. I don't know if they just changed the oil, but the crab claws and the garlic shrimp dumplings were incredible. We cleaned every plate except the jelly fish salad plate. afterwards, it was back to That Other Country still in search of cheap duck, which was not to be found at Sun Foods. We went down the street to Shuang Hur St. Paul and bought the duck there. I also bought a daikon and some carrots, mango juice, and few odds and ends. After much indecision, we ended up at Barbette's for dinner.

Sat
Sat we hung out at Casa Dinh. In the morning, I grated the carrots and daikon to pickle them. I cooked waffles and bacon for breakfast. We had mango mimosas. We ran out in search of olives and firewood, and my cousin read. We scored the olives at Bill's and firewood at mumble and Nicollet, came home, and started a fire. I showed an episode of Skins on the laptop that I'd talked about earlier. I set the table, and set out the olives and pickled herring. At some point, we got serious about the food, and seeded the pomegranate. I peeled the mango. We prepared:

  1. Mango mimosas with a slice of mango and pomegranate seeds, which both looked pretty and worked much, much better than I'd imagined.

  2. Olives and pickled herring with flatbread.

  3. Grilled quail with Bobby Flay's pomegranate BBQ sauce

  4. Mixed herb salad with red and yellow peppers, pickled daikon and carrots.

  5. Spun duck with haricot vert with the remaining red and yellow peppers, and Russian fingerling taters.

  6. Chocolate chocolate souffle with Grand Mariner whipped cream sweetened a bit more than usual because the 100 and 70 percent chocolate I used in the souffle wuzn't.

  7. Too damned many cheese for the plate.

  8. Fruit.

I just finished a big bowl of duck soup for breakfast. My sister and cousin are soon to be on their way to the wilds o' Dakota.

Wotever you do, don't go there before Saint Lucia's Day!

The mango juice we got in That Other Country someone informed us, was Asian mango juice. It was a wee bit thin and flavorless, but it was great for mixing with champagne because it didn't stomp all over the grapes. The American mango juice we bought at Bill's was incredibly richer, redder, and sweeter.
