Ah, that explains it all!
Oct. 3rd, 2006 04:45 amBlame it all on Demon Rum: "At a news conference in West Palm Beach, Fla., late Monday, Mr. Foley’s lawyer, David Roth, said that Mr. Foley had sent the inappropriate e-mail messages while under the influence of alcohol and that he had kept his drinking problem secret." More
And Mr. Hastert: "But the speaker said he and others had been “duped” by Mr. Foley, who when questioned about the e-mail said it was an innocent effort to make sure that the young man, who was from Louisiana, had made it through Hurricane Katrina." I guess this means Bush isn't the only one that's pulled the wool over his eyes...
This oughta comfort a lotta people: "At the news conference Monday night, Mr. Roth, Mr. Foley’s lawyer, denied that Mr. Foley had ever had inappropriate physical contact with minors. “Mark Foley has never, ever had inappropriate sexual contact with a minor in his life,” Mr. Roth said. “He is absolutely, positively not a pedophile.” He's a wannabe pedophile, and that's a completely different animal.
-- after all, he only talked about masturbation, and not like, did anything, or that that's sex or anything... Politicians never have sex, and then only with their wives in missionary positions! I thought everybody knew that!

History suggests that once a political party achieves sweeping power, it will only be a matter of time before the power becomes the entire point. Policy, ideology, ethics all gradually fall away, replaced by a political machine that exists to win elections and dispense the goodies that come as a result. The only surprise in Washington now is that the Congressional Republicans managed to reach that point of decayed purpose so thoroughly, so fast.
