Another month shot to hell.

I finished this one off in style. This morning, I woke up around 6:00, typed some recipes into the computer, and was off to the farmer's market to buy some new potatoes. I also picked up a smoked trout and some broad beans, which I'd intended to cook tonight. On my way home, I stopped at the French Meadow for bread, and then, after picking up my checkbook, at Bill's Imported Foods. (I'd wanted to pick up some shortbread cookies at the FM, but since they had none, settled for a misc. collection of their cookies.) At Bill's I bought some olives, olive oil, and a bag of mixed nuts.

From the farmer's market, I called Vern, and he came over later and we worked on putting the door back on the bathroom; doing some stuff upstairs, including cutting out some wood for the faucet, should it ever get back from Tennessee. We finished up around 5, when I dashed off to the store because I thought I need onions for the chicken I was going to cook tonight. While at Rainbow, I bought flour (just in case mine is buggy), chicken stock, and two big Vidalia onions.

When I got home from Rainbow, I hopped in the shower, shaved, and ran upstairs to assemble the pate that I'd cooked in the morning. After that was assembled, I started peeling pearl onions. After that, the next task was to chop mushrooms, but people started arriving by then. So, I laid out the smoked trout, pate, olives, french meadow bread, and some water biscuits. After I finished chopping mushrooms, I hacked the chicken into quarters, and started it cooking. The pan I wanted everything to fit into was a bit small, but I managed. I boiled water for beans (just the green variety, not the broad), and cooked the new potatoes. Around then, we did a quick tour of the remodeling projects, and sat down to eat salad, with apricots and a plethora of oils and vinegars.

After the salad, I threw four quarters of chicken on a platter and passed it around the table, then loaded it up again. Threw the cooked green beans into a dish, and filled a dish with sauce from the chicken. I think I sat down to eat around 8:30 or nine. My white quarter was just wonderful, and I assume the dark quarters, which cooked on the bottom were equally as good.

After we sat for a bit, I got up and made three espressos and a pot of tea. I set the plate of cookies on the table and whipped a pint of cream with powdered sugar and grand marnier. I washed a pint of blue berries, a bag of bing cherries, and a pint of the other cherries, and whacked up an underripe nectarine, and threw some brandy and sugar on it. The plan was that everybody could do exactly what they wanted with the cookies, fruit and whipped cream. Most seemed not to mind and it pretty much all got eaten. Lee brought some excellent wine, and I never got to open my clutch of shirazes.

Must get to Menards and get some light bulbs. Must put stuff away in office and get ready for estate taxes.

Emptied and filled the dishwasher. Put one load of laundry in the washer. It's gonna boil it, so it'll take a long time to end. a brief rain just moved through the area, and I should either start putting stuff away in this pig pen or head out to Menards...
