HOW wrong can you go for $2.25? That’s the price of a packet of 20 tomato seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. The variety I’m considering is called Furry Yellow Hog, and the catalog copy suggests that it has citrus notes and a four o’clock shadow, two traits I have never associated with a tomato. More

Yup, it's Seed Catalog Time -- and I'm enjoying it during the nearly a fortnight when we're getting too much rain to even go outside, much less actually work in the garden. Although... what they give is more like _promises_ of Miracles. My experience has been that heirloom seeds -- especially tomatoes -- are almost always highly-susceptible to some kind of disease or pest or climatic requirement that causes them to fail here in Southern California. *sigh* That doesn't mean I necessarily won't try a few of them, as limited space permits, but I sure won't be counting on anything to actually produce fruit. (Well... okay, I do kinda count on the small 'Yellow Pear' and the Terry Karney strain of Cherry Tomatoes, but not much else.)
