And when you do this, and someone follows, do they have to log in, or does doing this somehow bypass this?

It's just plain stealing. It doesn't bypass a login, but I'm not sure how much of the NY Times requires it any longer. I ustta subscribe, so I've had a login for a quite a few years. There are ways to bypass the login, but math is hard... ;-)
