This Math Whiz Called It for Obama Months Ago

At 9:46 p.m., blogging on his site FiveThirtyEight.com, Nate Silver called the presidential election for Barack Obama. The television networks followed suit about an hour and 15 minutes later after most polls in Western states closed.
Of course, Mr. Silver had a head start: he had forecast that Senator Obama would beat Senator John McCain back in March. Link

Date: 2008-11-10 01:06 pm (UTC)OTOH, not calling the race until California came in (which was the proper thing to do), gave us a "national moment." Every network called it for Obama, people around the country and around the world screamed in excitement, people honked their horns. Friends of mine in denser urban areas (living in Manhattan, for example), describe a palpable roar of joy that extended up from the streets.
I'm glad we all got the "news" at 11:00 Eastern Time.
