Shows at the Cedar
Greetings from the Cedar!
Every now and then the stars align, and an otherwise normal weekend is transformed by a panoply of stunning acts converging on the Cedar. The four shows, beginning with tonight’s Senegalese hip hop group Daara J, through Friday’s songs from Cape Verde with Lura, Saturday’s folk/blues/jazz from Bonnie Koloc and Don Stille, and Sunday’s CD release for local Celtic favorite Piper’s Crow, exemplify the Cedar’s mission of bringing the World’s music here, and our commitment to diversity. All shows are selling well, but there is still room for you to come out and delight your ears and feet with one or more of these musical treats:
Thursday 1/26
***Daara J
Co-presented by 89.3 The Current.
Winners of the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award for ‘Best African Act,’ Daara J has spent months atop the European world music charts. Daara J’s American debut recording Boomerang melts borders with touches of English and Spanish peppered among the rapid-fire courses of French and Wolof, a prominent native Senegalese tongue, uniting the international hip hop community.
Editor’s note: The Cedar’s Artistic Director, Bill Kubeczko, saw Daara J this week at a music presenters conference in New York, not once but twice, and reports “Awesome—best of the festival!”
7.30pm $12 advance, $15 day of show $10 students with ID

Friday 1/27
***Lura
Co-presented by 89.3 The Current.
“The music of the West African archipelago of Cape Verde is a fascinating blend of cultural influences, with some sounds echoing the mainland's traditional tunes and others that wafted in on the wind from other tropical climes. Lura is a singer from the ample Cape Verdean community within Lisbon, Portugal, so her music manages to toss a few more Latin spices into the recipe, creating a style that can be soothing, propulsive, mournful or joyous but always filled to the brim with emotion. She and her band make their Twin Cities debut by bringing some warm breezes to a January night.” (Rob Hubbard, Pioneer Press “Best Bet Jan 26—Feb 1”
“I actually saw Lura in São Tomé and in Lisbon last July and I can tell you that she'll bring the house down. She is incredibly charismatic,
warm, talented, and sensuous. The crowd will go wild! (: “ (A Cedar customer 1/24/06)
7.30pm $18 advance, $20 day of show $15 students with ID

Saturday 1/28
Bonnie Koloc with Don Stille
Fans of Rory Block (due for a Cedar return on May 12) and Kelley Hunt could do far, far worse than check out Bonnie Koloc! Bonnie has been performing around Chicago since the late 60’s, including a long stint with two other greats from the period, Steve Goodman and John Prine. In time, her folk-oriented style merged with jazz and blues, and later yet, she became an active print-maker, painter, ceramicist, writer, and illustrator! Her jazz/blues-infused hot-off-the-presses recording Here to sing features her own originals, as well as the classic Little Red Rooster, and two songs from North Dakotan farmer/folksinger Chuck Suchy. Renowned jazz pianist Don Stille (named Mainstream Jazz Pianist of the Year by the Twin Cities Jazz Society, and house pianist and often-featured jazz artist on National Public Radio's "First House on the Right") will be providing the piano chops to backup Bonnie’s powerful, clear voice.
8pm $15 advance, $18 day of show $12 students with ID Special Members 2-for-1 show!

Piper’s Crow CD release
Piper’s Crow features Laura MacKenzie, Dick Hensold, Karen Mueller, and Zack Kline. The band specializes in traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, Galicia, Cape Breton Island, and Northumberland, artfully blended with original compositions in the traditional style. The group's repertoire centers on the lush sonic blend of smallpipes, fiddle, flute and guitar, with their musical palette ranging from MacKenzie's lovely vocals to dramatic greatpipe duels. Celebrating the release of their first CD, the self-titled Piper’s Crow!
