P.S. Hitler and the Nazi's where quite firmly on the far left of the scale the clues in the name. National SOCIALIST German WORKERS Party. Its seems very stupid to bracket authoritarians like Hitler together with libertarians like Ron Paul in one category of "far right".

That's pretty amazingly blind to history.

Really?

Jonah Goldbreged, perhaps.

(there was also the issue of [livejournal.com profile] lsanderson can't possibly be posting this unironically, but I've posted stuff that I read one way and had it actually be the opposite or something equally appalling that I've accidentally just put up there, so I have to make sure. If I posted something like that I would want someone to come and ask me how I was using it.)

That said, thinking about it makes me understand how that connection is easy to make if you are ignorant or disingenuous. Given that we fought Right-Authoritarians for really only 5 years of our modern history and Left-Authoritarians (point is arguble ... a lot of times the Soviets were more authoritarian than they ever were left) for ten times that long, it sort of makes sense that people who had experience with the Cold War would naturally group left and authority inextricably together, and, if they did not know enough or care enough or had an agenda preventing them from examining that, they could be fooled by the labels that the Nazis put on their party, specifically to fool the Germans of their day (not that I can imagine it took as many Germans in then as it seems to take in Americans now...)

And China's a republic. Says so in the name! So was East Germany.

So the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is both Democratic and a Republic?

I've seen this crazy argument advanced elsewhere as proof of how bad, evil, and vile the left obviously is. It seemed not to have gone over well in England. I guess they remember the last world war or something.
